Domain transfers

Moving your domain name to a new provider gives you greater control over where your domain is managed. A domain transfer lets you switch registrars while keeping your existing domain name and website unchanged.

There are many reasons you might decide to transfer a domain name to a new provider.

Fairer pricing. Simpler domain management tools. More reliable support. With Krystal, that’s exactly what you get. You’ll also be transferring your domain to a registrar that cares about their impact on people and the planet.

Transferring your domain to us means no downtime and a fixed price that stays the same when you renew. And our UK-based support team will be on hand to support throughout via live chat, ticket or phone.

Transferring a .uk domain

  • Step 1 - Place your order

Log in to your Krystal Client area and go to Domains > Transfer Domain to Us. Enter your domain name and complete checkout. There’s no transfer fee, though you’ll pay for a year of registration as part of the order. An EPP code isn’t needed for .uk transfers. Place the order before changing the IPS tag because our systems need the order to know where to assign the domain.

  • Step 2 - Change the IPS tag

Log in to your current registrar and change the IPS tag on your domain to KRYSTAL (all uppercase). Your current registrar’s support team can help with this or ask ours.

  • Step 3 - Done

Once Nominet processes the tag change, the domain appears in your Krystal Client area. This usually takes minutes.

What to expect

  • Cost

No transfer fee. You pay for one year of registration at the standard price for that extension.

  • Time

Minutes once the IPS tag is changed.

  • Downtime

None, if your DNS records stay the same.

  • Registration time

Your remaining time carries over and one year is added from your current expiry date.

Transferring a .com, .net, .org or other gTLD

  • Step 1 - Unlock your domain

Log in to your current registrar and turn off the domain transfer lock (sometimes called the registrar lock). If your current registrar has WHOIS privacy or a domain privacy service enabled, turn it off before starting the transfer. It can block the authorisation emails.

  • Step 2 - Get your EPP code

Request the EPP code (also called an authorisation code or auth code) from your current registrar. You’ll usually receive it by email within 24 hours.

  • Step 3 - Place your transfer order

Log in to your Krystal Client area and go to Domains > Transfer Domain to Us. Enter your domain name and EPP code, then complete checkout.

  • Step 4 - Approve the transfer

You’ll receive a confirmation email asking you to approve the domain name transfer. Once you confirm, the transfer begins.

  • Step 5 - Transfer completes

The transfer typically takes five to seven days. When it finishes, the domain appears in your Krystal Client area with full DNS and management controls.

What to expect

  • Cost

One year of registration at the standard price for that extension (this year is added to your remaining registration time).

  • Time

Five to seven days after approval.

  • Downtime

None, if your DNS records stay the same.

  • Registration time

Your remaining time carries over and one year is added from your current expiry date.

Before you transfer a domain

Here are a few things you should check before you start the process of transferring a domain.

  1. DNS records

If your DNS is currently hosted with your existing registrar, check whether they keep the DNS zone active after a transfer. Some providers delete it when the domain leaves their system. If your domain already points to Krystal’s nameservers, no DNS changes are needed.

  2. Email

If you use a third-party email provider like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, make sure your MX records are set correctly before and after the transfer. A domain transfer does not change DNS records, but losing a DNS zone at your old registrar could interrupt email delivery.

  3. 60-day lock

gTLD domains (.com, .net, .org etc.) cannot be transferred within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. If your domain was recently registered or moved, you may need to wait.

  4. Registrant changes

For non-UK domains, changing the registrant’s first name, last name, organisation or email address triggers a 60-day transfer lock. Make contact changes either well before or after the transfer, not during.
